What is the train of Pelion (Moutzouris)?

Moutzouris is a historic steam train that crosses the green slopes of Pelion, connecting Volos with Milies. Construction of the railway began in 1894 and was completed in 1903 by the Italian engineer Evaristo de Chirico, father of the famous painter Giorgio de Chirico. The railway is one of the narrowest lines in the world, at just 60 cm wide.

Which route does the Pelion train follow?

The Pelion Train operates from spring to autumn, making a daily trip from Ano Lechonia to Milies. Throughout, the passenger can enjoy the unique natural beauty, the view of the Pagasitikos and the bridge de Chirico, a rare metal bridge located just before Milies.

When does the train operate?

It operates on weekends from spring to autumn, making one trip a day from Ano Lechonia to Milies. The duration of the trip is approximately 90 minutes.

How can I book tickets for the train?

You can book tickets for Moutzouris from the official website of the Hellenic Railway Organization (now Hellenic Train) at this link: https://tickets.hellenictrain.gr/dromologia/ or click here.

Select Ano Lechonia as your departure station and Milies as your destination and the date you wish to travel (Saturday or Sunday only). Don’t forget to select that you want a returning ticket for the same date if you want to return to the station in Ano Lechonia

  • The ticket costs 18 euros return and the journey takes about an hour and a half.

That steam locomotive ride was definitely one of my highlights – a great experience. Today, the Pelion train runs between the villages of Ano Lechonia and Milies. The only stop of the train is at Ano Gatzea station, from where it travels to Milies. It takes a total of about 90 minutes to travel the 15 km line.
